Slowed by the Sea – Maldives Moments
Slowed by the Sea – Maldives Moments & Ocean Magic
Sometimes the wild brings you back to yourself.
There’s something about the Maldives that shifts your rhythm without asking. The moment you land, time stretches, your breath deepens, and the ocean becomes your clock.
Surfing: I managed to sneak away from mum life a few times to surf Ninja break a mellow right-hand break. The ground moved beneath you as you tread towards the point- hermit crabs scurrying away from each step. Launching my board into shallow water trying not to gauge it on coral. Sitting in the calm between sets admiring the water clarity yet anxious about dodging the sea urchins on the outgoing tide…

Snorkelling: One of the most unforgettable moments was diving with tawny nurse sharks — gentle giants of the deep. Gliding through warm blue currents beside them was both calming and electrifying. Their movements were slow, almost meditative, and yet every second underwater sparked awe. It reminded me how small we are in the grand rhythm of the sea — and how grounding that can be.

Lazy days on land: On land, life was just as raw and beautiful. Hermit crabs scuttled underfoot, turning every walk into a gentle dance to avoid crushing them. Reef sharks cruised past the docks at sunset, their sleek forms silhouetted by the fading gold light. With no shoes, barely any layers, and endless warm days melting into balmy nights, the island asked nothing of me but to simply be.
There was no rush. No noise (apart from my children occasionally screaming at each other.... scratch that..... always screamin) Just the rustle of palms, the hush of waves, and the clarity that comes when everything slows down. I found inspiration in the smallest things — the curve of a shell, the way the light danced on water, the stillness of the island at sunrise.

Island life simplifies you. It strips back the layers and lets your senses lead. And from that space, SUMR designs are born — intentionally, slowly, and with a deep respect for nature’s rhythms.
This trip was a reminder that beauty lives in the details, and inspiration is always waiting — just beneath the surface.
It was this trip that sparked TIDE print! A print designed in appreciation of the OCEAN, an element of fierce yet calming energy.

Holiday here:
We had booked an all‑inclusive stay at Club Med Kani, and from the moment we arrived, everything shifted. You can get to the island by water plane or boat — we chose the boat, but I’ve heard the plane gives you the most insane reef views from above.
Once we checked in, we didn’t take our wallets out a single time. It genuinely felt like royalty vibes — wandering up to cafés and bars and helping ourselves to whatever we pleased. That’s the magic of all‑inclusive when you’re travelling with kids.
Another reason we chose this island is because it’s one of the few places where you can actually paddle out to a surf break directly from the island. Since our 2‑year‑old was too young for kids club, we couldn’t take day‑trip surf boats out. So instead, we took turns paddling out to Ninja Break — a mellow right‑hand reef break. The little island you paddle out from is overflowing with hermit crabs in their little shells scurrying past your feet - its almost hard to to step on them there are so many!
The water was crystal clear, the wildlife was incredible, and I even met some locals out there who warned me: “Make sure you paddle back before the tide gets too low — otherwise you’ll be stuck in a landscape of sea urchins.” That visual stuck with me.
I do wish I got to explore more surf spots, but honestly, I’m still so grateful for what I did get to experience. The combination of surf, family time, and that Maldives magic made it unforgettable.
