Metal types and care.

Caring for your jewellery

The metal treasures made by SUMR are tarnish resistant however nothing lasts forever if not properly cared for. To maintain the shine of your jewelry, it is best to avoid exposing it to chlorinated pools or saltwater. If you do wear your jewelry while swimming, be sure to rinse it with clean water afterward, dry it thoroughly, and store it in a dry place away from humidity when not in use.

Sumr Collective offers the following jewellery options

  • Vermeil/Gold Plated 9.25 Sterling Silver: Silver is a durable metal that doesn’t deteriorate easily, maintaining its quality for years—making it an ideal choice for long-lasting jewelry. This is one reason why gold vermeil jewelry is often considered waterproof. If the gold plating eventually wears off, you’re left with beautiful silver underneath, no green discolouration on the skin, or negative skin reactions. For Normal wear and tear the gold plating will generally last at least one year however, there are many factors to consider like perspiration, lotions, perfume, and certain medications that may all contribute to tarnishing sooner.
  • Gold-Filled: Gold-filled jewellery is made by bonding a thick layer of gold to a base metal, SUMR uses 5% 14k gold by weight with a brass core. Often marketed as waterproof, it is designed to resist tarnishing, peeling, chipping, or discolouration, offering lasting beauty and durability. Suitable for sensitive skin.
  • Gold-Plated Stainless Steel: Highly durable and tarnish-resistant, often marketed as waterproof. Gold-plated stainless steel is hypoallergenic due to its chromium content, which prevents corrosion and skin irritation.
  • Heavy Gold-Plated Brass: Highly durable and tarnish-resistant, SUMR uses 14k Gold plated brass - similar to gold fill but without the hallmark. The colour appears as a light gold and can be worn daily.
  • Sterling Silver:  is a precious metal that naturally tarnishes over time, though the rate can vary. Factors like perspiration, lotions, perfume, and certain medications may accelerate tarnishing. This tarnish can be easily polished off and restored to its sparkling colour. To remove tarnish or dirt, use a polishing cloth or for a deeper clean, try a silver cleaning solution or a simple bicarbonate soda mixture. When you're not wearing your jewellery, store it in the pouch provided to protect it from damage.
